Alamut was originally written in 1938 as an allegory of Mussolini`s fascist state. In the 1960s it became a cult in Tito`s Yugoslavia, in the 1990s, during the Balkan War, it was read as an allegory of the region`s struggles and became a bestseller in Germany, France and Spain. After the attacks of 11 September 2001, the book had a new life thanks to its first description of the world of suicide bombers in fanatic sects and sold more than 20,000 copies in a new Slovenian edition.
